Introduction to Birding >> March 2 | 8:30- 10:30 a.m.

Do you enjoy watching birds in your backyard? Are you someone who wants to develop your birding interest into an active recreational hobby? Then sign up for Introduction to Birding!
This program will include a brief talk covering topics such as what makes Fontenelle Forest one of the top birding sites in Nebraska, some tips on finding small, fast-moving birds with binoculars, and a visual primer on species we are most likely to see in our given season. This program is strongly recommended for adults and families with children ages 12+.

Winter Wellness >> March 3 | 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.

Beat the winter blues and embrace a season of self-care at Fontenelle Forest’s Winter Wellness Series! Each of the four sessions will ground attendees in nature, use artistic expression and incorporate the tranquility and serenity of the winter season.
March's program is called "Silent Saunter." Awaken your senses in nature as we take a silent stroll on the Riverview Boardwalk and nearby trails.
This program is geared towards adults 18 and older.

Fontenelle Trading Post: Speaker Series >> March 3 | 1:00 - 2:30 p.m

Learn about the fascinating history of the Fontenelle Trading Post! This Speaker Series is designed to complement the Nebraska’s Deep Roots exhibit currently on display in the Baright Gallery.
Lance Foster – Tribal Vice Chairman, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, and member of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska – will join us to share the history of the fur trade from the perspective of the Iowa tribe.

Acorn Academy >> March 5 & 19 | 9:30- 11:00 a.m.

Homeschool students six years and older are invited to learn at the Forest on select Tuesday mornings at Acorn Academy!
Students will engage with a variety of nature-based topics through science experiments, creative writing, group projects, crafts and more. Our program materials, activities and lessons are designed to accommodate students of a variety of ages and learning styles.
At the Acorn Academy, students are encouraged to follow their interests, explore nature and make new friends!
This event is $8 per child for members and $8 per child + daily admission for non-members. Members must sign in to receive discount.

Volunteer 101 >> March 9 | 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.

This informational session will provide you with a broad overview of Fontenelle Forest as an organization, and highlight the various opportunities the Forest has for you to participate as a volunteer.
As a small, non-profit organization, volunteers are critical to the work we do. We rely on the help and support of volunteers to help us fulfill our mission! Become a valued member of the Fontenelle Forest team! Current volunteers who have not yet attended Volunteer 101 are also welcome. This event is free for both members and non-members.

Seniors Understanding Nature >> March 12 | 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
1111 Bellevue Blvd. North | Bellevue
Join us for our Seniors Understanding Nature (SUN) lecture series at the Nature Center! This program is for adults ages 55 and up who enjoy learning about the natural world.
What mammal is found on every continent except Antarctica, can fly 60 mph, may live up to 30 years, and can eat its weight in insects every night? Bats of course! Join us as Dr. Jeremy White from the University of Nebraska at Omaha shares with us his study of bats and the fungal disease, white nose syndrome, that is impacting them.

Spring Break Camp >> March 13 -15 | 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. daily
Location varies by age group
Every day of Fontenelle Forest’s Spring Break Camp is packed with nature and fun! We’ll play games, hike, make campfires with s’mores, construct spring-themed crafts and so much more!
Camp is the perfect place for your kids to get outside, make new friends and learn outdoor skills. Let your camper’s love of the outdoors blossom as we explore the Forest this spring. NEW FOR 2024: This year we’re offering camps for two age groups: ages 6-8 and ages 9-12!
Camp is $100 for members and $125 for non-members. Registration is required. Members must sign in to receive discount.

Land Stewardship Volunteer Work Day >> March 16 | 8:30 - 11:00 a.m.
Locations vary
The volunteer Land Stewardship crew meets on select Saturday mornings to work on various projects. Anyone is welcome to join, even if it’s just one time. Bring the family and get some hard work done with us. Projects, start time, and location will be announced via email blast 10 days prior to the workday.

Breakfast with the Raptors >> March 16 | 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.

Join us for a pancake feed benefiting Fontenelle Forest’s raptors! Enjoy bacon, sausage, and all-you-can-eat pancakes courtesy of The Pancake Man. Learn all about our resident birds of prey and the impact Fontenelle Forest has on raptor awareness, education and conservation during breakfast. Then head to the Great Hall to see our raptor ambassadors up close and take photos.

Spring Equinox Celebration >> March 16 | 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Camp Brewster | 1313 Bellevue Blvd. North | Bellevue
Come celebrate the changing seasons of the Forest at our Solstice & Equinox events!
Each Solstice/Equinox Celebration will include a seasonal craft, a short hike, a bonfire with s’mores and an opportunity to learn more about the folklore that surrounds each of these astrological phenomena.

Full Moon Hike >> March 22 | 8:00 - 10:00 p.m.
1111 Bellevue Blvd. North | Bellevue
Have you ever hiked under a full moon? Or wondered what comes out after dark in the Forest? Find out on our guided Full Moon Hikes!
Hikes will begin no later than 30 minutes after the event start time, so be sure to arrive on time. All hikes will include an educational discussion of the nocturnal animals around the Forest and a brief talk into the lore of full moons. The event will include a bonfire and s’mores.

Trails Less Traveled >> March 23 | 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Want to try something new? Do you want to hike trails that others don’t usually take? Discover your inner explorer and join us for our newest guided hike series, Trails Less Traveled!
These guided hikes will focus on trails “less traveled” both at Fontenelle Forest and our other properties. Expect to trek long distances over a variety of terrain. Each guided hike will last for 2 hours, covering easy, moderate, and strenuous trails.
This event is $10 for members and $18 for non-members. Registration is required. Members must sign in to receive discount.

Habitat Hikes >> March 24 | 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
The Wetlands | 103 Camp Gifford Road | Omaha, NE 68005
Explore Nebraska’s prairies, wetlands and forests at Fontenelle Forest’s Habitat Hikes! Join our naturalist educators on a guided hike through these different habitats and learn about each of these unique ecosystems!
Habitat Hikes will be held monthly, as we visit different locations and discover habitat changes each season. February's hike will take place at Neale Woods Nature Reserve.

Fontenelle Trading Post Exhibit: Nebraska's Deep Roots >>
April 2023 to December 2024

Fontenelle Forest is celebrating the 200-year anniversary of the Fontenelle Trading Post with a history exhibit located in the Baright Gallery. This experience tells the story of how the Fontenelle Trading Post came to be and what a trading post during the 1800’s may have looked like.
The Nebraska’s Deep Roots exhibit will be open daily at the Fontenelle Forest Nature Center. This exhibit is free for members or with daily admission for non-members.
